It is no secret that America runs on small businesses. In 2019, small businesses accounted for 44% of our national GDP and employed well over 40% of American’s workforce. Yet in 2020, during the height of the pandemic small businesses only received roughly $360 billion dollars in aid while Wall Street and money markets received $5 trillion dollars. That’s only a whopping 7% for a sector that contributes to greater product diversity, makes a major economic impact to the US economy and employs nearly half of America’s workforce.

So what can you do?

It’s simple. Buy from small businesses this holiday season. By buying from small businesses you are putting money directly back into your community. Here’s how:

  1. Your money goes a long way with us. When you spend $100 at a small company like ours it means a great deal to us. The harsh truth is when you spend $100 at Walmart or Amazon it virtually means nothing to them. The impact your $100 dollars makes on a small business is far greater.
  2. Small businesses pay more than their fair share of local, State and Federal taxes. These taxes are in turn used for better schools, public works projects, roads, libraries, etc. Dollars spent at Nordstroms or Banana Republic do not stay in local communities. And most likely, most fortune 500 companies may have tax shelters and other tax avoidance schemes in place to hoard as much of their money as possible.
  3. Small businesses also employ people from their own communities. Those employees in turn are able to buy goods and services from their neighborhoods, thereby further contributing to our local economies. These businesses are often the lifeline of their surroundings and the people who live around them.
  4. Independent businesses add to local culture and the vibrancy of a community. Without these small businesses there would be nothing but big box stores in stucco buildings, all selling the same products. Small establishments are often the character of a community
  5. Most, if not all small businesses are run by individual owners, families, and partnerships NOT by boards, marketing decisions, algorithms or stockholders. The quality of decisions are governed with more humanity as a result.

The small business sector has been devastated by the economic downturn of 2020. Regardless of whether you believe in COVID 19 or its handling and whether or not the government acted appropriately, the reality is over 300,000 small businesses have shut down and will not return as a result.

So do your part this holiday season and shop at small businesses.
